In case of imminent endangerment of the environment, BALSA GmbH undertakes the projecting and realisation of measures for the protection / remediation of affected properties.
Contaminated site N53 “Rütgers-Angern tar factory”
On this site measuring approx. 11.2 hectares, a production of tar-products and of wood preservatives as well as a wood impregnation plant were run from 1860 to 1924. Almost the whole area´s soil has been contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In places, tar even appears at the surface.
As a result of these subsoil-contaminations, a vast contaminant plume (containing PAH and BTEX as well as – tangentially – heterocyclic aromatic and phenolic hydrocarbons and arsenic) has developed. The contaminant loads in the groundwater downstream are very large.
Immediate Measures in accordance with § 30 Environmental Support Act:
Based on the results of soil analyses and the professional advice of the Federal Environmental Agency (Umweltbundesamt GmbH), the topsoil was exchanged in order to foreclose potential health risks. The essential element was the exchange of approx. 50cm of the highly polluted topsoil in the area of approx. 48 plots of land (total area approx. 50.000 m²).
Assignments of BALSA:
Realisation of the project, acting as master of the works in substitution of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management:
- detailed planning
- carrying out of tendering and award procedures
- local technical and financial supervision of works
Finalization of immediate measures in accordance with §30 Environmental Support Act in May, 2015.
